I have a 68' with a L16b in it. I just got this car not too long ago, so I
am trying to learn about it. Anyway, it does have a single Weber downdraft
carb in it also. I am sure a L20 is the same size, but I have no idea. I
don't have an air scoop, and the car has not been structurally altered
either. (I hear sometimes you have to cut a hole somewhere for the oil pump
to fit?) The guy I bought it from made somekind of custom motor mounts that
raises up the engine to overcome this problem. (that is what he told me at
least) The car also has a 73 pickup tranny. He told me that when all is
said and done, the only difference is the stickshift is two inches closer to
the dash. The truck tranny makes for real quick gears and shifting, but 4th
is 1:1. Has anyone ever heard of such a beast?
I would not say this has been done "professionally"(I am sure the guy I
bought if from would disagree), but there is probably worse ones out there.
The main problem is the oil pump is sitting on the frame (I think), so I
don't know how long it will be before I have to deal with that.
This brings me to the point. The car that was the original post to this
thread, was said to be done "professionally" too. I don't know if that is
possible, because however it is done, it has to be creative and you have to
mishmash parts together. Anyway, after talking to a few roadster buffs,
that is what I have picked up.
Now I have some questions...
Does anyone know if there is a five speed tranny out there that will work?
(were there any five speed truck tranny's made in 73' or something else that
would fit?)
Is the L20b the same size and configuration as the L16b? I mean, how easy
is it to swap? I am not really a mechanic, so I have no idea about either
of these questions..
My car runs great now. I really love it. I was just a wonderin' that's
all.
Like I said, I just got the car, so I am at the beginning of a long
adventure. My buddy just bought a twenty something thousand dollar Outback,
so in all reality, what is dropping a couple thousand into the Roadster to
really fix it up? And you KNOW who has the cooler car.
