tach cable seal

I had replaced the seal on my tach cable this summer after a trip from N CA
to Montana.  On the way back from Solvang a familiar drop of oil landed on
my leg.

I have a new seal and the distributor out of the car but would like to know
any tips on keeping this from being a regular occurance.  I don't think the
seal should have failed so soon, within a 1000 miles.
