Ben,

It sounds like your regulator is giving up the ghost!  (sorry, I could not 
resist that one!)  I would replace the regulator and that should solve the 
problem.  The last time that I checked, there is a solid state version 
available at the parts store.  It just may take a while to get the parts 
clerk to believe that Datsun existed before the 240Z.............
