Laurie,

Your symptom  of the engine dying as soon as the key is released is what 
happens when the ballast resistor is open.  It is possible to have the
resistor short out some of its turns, allowing more current to flow
through the coil and points.  Granted, an open ballast is more common
than a shorted one, but it is possible.
