Installing and Removing Dash Caps

Hello All,
        The PO installed a dash cap on my car but managed to put a HUGE crack
in it right down the middle.  So I want to remove it and install a new one. 
What is the method for properly installing a dash cap and is there ANY way
to remove the old one without ripping the dash underneath to shreds??
