Adam,

If you don't have that valve on your car which is mounted on the intake
manifold that shuts off the coolant flowing to the heater core I highly
recommend that you leave the heater on HOT at all times.

I removed that valve and noticed my head temps would soar with my heater set
to COLD. The coolant doesn't flow around the head. Some have called me
insane for saying that but I know what my temp gauge says. If you set it to
defroster it really doesn't throw off much heat.
