Neil,
Use something like a LM317 in a T220 package. It is adjustable, supplies
a good 1 Amp of current, and will tolerate the input voltage. Use a
good filter, (diode, resistor, cap) on the input.
Set the adjustment voltage range from 7 to 9 volts. Personally I found
around 8V worked fine, but nice thing with the adjustable output voltage
is to adjust it for the water temperature when HOT.
Mount the whole thing inside the old metal can, and viola... a modern
"voltage stabilizer" for the vehicle.
