When I first put the idea forward of helping to form SoCalROC a couple of
years ago, I immediately heard about two things: The prior version of the
roadster club DROC was killed primarily due to politics and bad blood
between some of the members and also that it is hard to keep people
interested and to keep them participating.
I am a single guy and I have no children. I understand it is easier for me
to go on a run or to a meet as I will work my schedule around my roadster.
Other people have higher priorities. They have to work their roadster around
their schedules and sometimes the roadster doesn't win. That's life and
that's cool with me.
I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a club or increase
participation in an exisiting club that all you can do is invite people to
your event and hope they show up. You cannot berate someone for choosing
another interest or event over their roadster. Also, anyone can organize an
event. I tell the SoCalROC members that anyone can organize an event. Just
invite people to come. If they show up: great. If not: that's great too.
Gary Cohen once told me it only takes two roadsters to have a fun run. I
agree.
So whether it's BADROC, SoCalROC, WycROC, SEROC, NOWROC, or whatever ROC,
the idea is that if you want to invite people to come out for a drive than
it is up to you to do it.
