Since I had the heater box back out, I got to thinking about the recent
posts describing padding around the core inside the box. Given the age of
our cars, I would guess that this padding was something like horsehair. We
are not zoned for horses, so I tried to think up an alternative.
At first I considered foam insulation, and looked at the tube insulators
that go around water pipes in the attic. I then thought about the blower
motor. To need a resistor the size of the one in the heater box suggested
that the motor drew a lot of current. That means more than a bit of ozone as
well. If I learned anything from working on copy machines, it is that ozone
dissolves foam rubber very quickly. Turns it into an oooey-gooey paste in no
time.
I then found something lying on the bench that I think will work very well.
A ScotchBrite green scrubby pad! It's not made of foam and it is designed to
be water-resistant. I sliced up some strips and glued them to the heater
core using all-purpose glue.
A check fit showed that the pad is just the right thickness as well. Posted
