S304 is a "standard" stainless steel with chrome
and nickel content. Also known as 18/8 stainless.
It also have a high heat expansion, about 1/8"
for every foot of pipe length which is common
with stainless exhausts. Some stainless exhausts
use a mix of different stainless types to even out
the heat expansion and to avoid stress cracks.
Some modern cars have tailpipe temperatures
of 1150F at full power. Just behind the catalytic
converter it's not uncommon to have 1800F.
Older cars with carbs and no cat, temperatures
in the exhaust rarely goes over 800F so the expansion
is not such a big problem. If you install a stainless
exhaust add a little more clearance than whatever
is considered acceptable for a mild steel exhaust.
