metric thread near 7/16ths-14?

Hello All,
        Got another random question.  I was trying to attach the new master
cylinder to the new vacuum booster on out 73 pickup.  The studs on the old
vacuum booster were 3/8-16  The new studs appear to be 7/16ths-14 but when I
try to snug down nuts on them they start to strip off?  Is there a metric
equivalent that is damn near but not quite 7/16ths-14?
