The backing plate is held on to the axle by the bearing retainer - short
answer, it has to come out with the axle.  
If it's a wheel bearing, you'll have to disconnect the brake line at the
wheel cyl to remove the axle.  Then the fun begins as you need to cut
off the bearing retainer.
If it's a diff bearing, I unbolt the flexible brake line from the axle
housing and then disconnect the hard brake line from the left rear wheel
cyl.  Cap the open brake line with tubing so that fluid doesn't continue
to leak out of it.  With the brake line disconnected on one side, you
can pull both axle shafts out far enough to remove the diff.
If you cap the brake line, you might get away without having to bleed
the brakes.
