for what its worth, I found that cutting an open ended 1/2 inch wrench in half 
made it easier to maneuver underneath the carbs. 

also in belated response to a windshield post, the only time I tried to put a 
new windshield back in, I broke it, and had a shop put in the next one.  As 
they say on TV, don't try this at home.
