OT Airbag

I need an airbag deployment lesson on a 2000 Infiniti Q45.

So, when do the airbags deploy?

Thursday my Q became an accordian. I got the car stopped but got nailed from
behind and pushed into the truck in front of me. No airbags deployed in the Q
but all the bags in the VW that hit me did.

So, how does the airbag system work?
