check all the usual suspects: ujoints, bearings and of course the rear.

I had a noise in my MGB - more like a whine - and when I replaced the 
pumpkin and examined the gears they were shot. No problems in the Datsun 
however.

Also make sure the backing plate for the brakes isn't grinding against the 
drums.
