Hello FOT,
We had a great time at Laguna Seca last weekend! The weather was great, people
were friendly, and the track was a whole lot of fun. San Francisco SCCA really
knows how to run an event. The corner workers were teriffic and we were on
time all weekend!
A bunch of us So Cal Triumph guys made the trek, including Paul Smock, John
Frymark, Alan Mzutani, Alan Weins, and Vince DePalma. Also in our pits were
some lesser cars (MG and Elva), but the people were so nice we decided to let
them stay anyway.
Saturday morning John Frymark led us around the track (he had raced there
before) and after some excellent instruction and evaluation, he decided that we
could continue racing with him the rest of the weekend. Thanks John!:) We
were all in group 2 which was a little strange, the group included everything
from a TR6, Ginetta, and Cortina to a Spitfire 1147. We did well in Saturday's
race: The TR4s and my Spit were gridded in the top 20 for the race on Sunday.
We only had a couple of problems on Saturday. Alan Ms Spitfire puked a clutch
disk and Vince and Alan Ws Spitfires were too loud. Not surprising because if
you knew Vince and Alan, you know that they are always cheating to try to get
some sort of advantage! :). After removing a few Supertrapp disks here and
stuffing mufflers there, both met the noise requirement for the rest of the
weekend. Alan M also fixed his cluch to get him back out for Sunday.
Sunday was beautiful without a cloud in the sky. The track was oily for our
race so the first lap was interesting. Porsches spinning in oil made it very
exciting. Funny how they are always doing that. Anyway, after all was said
and done, the TR6 of Tom Kreger (Vancouver, Washington) won the race! The next
Triumph was 8th, my Spitfire, passed at the line (I blew the last turn) by a
Mini. John Fs Tr4 was 14th and Paul Smock 19th. The best part was that all
but one of the Triumphs were running at the end of the race. Alan M couldn't
quite lick his clutch problems. It didn't help that someone ran into the back
of his car either.
In celebration of our sucess, the Angels decided to win the World Series. A
race weekend doesn't get much better than this one, and I was very happy to
have been there.
Next stop VARA in Vegas the weekend after next. Can't wait!
