I think you guys are missing the point ... it's Supposed to be Bad
Literature.

IMO the mechanical non-sequitors are part of the "parody".

Secret Life of Walter Mitty" by one of the greatest humorists of all 
time, James Thurber. (A Google search will turn up any number of copies 
that can be read online...or you can go to your local library.)
