Jack,

Being from the Akron area, I seem to recall hearing that the only tires
still made in Akron are the Goodyear Racing Tires. So NASCAR would be true
for Akron and GY. F1 Indy tires??? Are they Bridgestone/Firestone? Don't
know about Hoosiers other than the obvious reference to Indiana.

What's the source of your information?

Now where the rubber is formulated or mixed is another story and it could be
that the rubber for GY and Hoosiers or B/F and Hoosiers is mixed at the same
plants. I really doubt that GY and B/F trade any information but either of
them might well sell mixed rubber to Hoosier.

My previous company is a very large custom mixer of rubber compounds and
often mixed for GY, B/F and Michelin but did so to each of the individual
companies formulations and under very strict confidentiality agreements. The
mixing was done for each of those companies when there were breakdowns or
scheduled outages at their plants or for very special compounds. I don't
recall ever hearing about mixing for Hoosier however. Also each of the tire
companies put the mixing division through rigorous trial batches to assure
consistency batch to batch. There are many ways to compound a certain rubber
for defined performance and the tire companies each think their way is the
best and of course Brand X doesn't know what they are doing. In the end they
all use the same stuff to come up with their particular "best" compound.
Those chemists have a lot of pride in their products and how they get their
results. It's a fascinating business.

My thoughts
JVV
