I had the engine apart after it broke a rocker, so I diassembled for total
cleaning, replacement of one piston, bent valve, etc., had the cylinders
honed, did not replace the rings, reassembled and it blew a lot of smoke. My
machine shop guy said "you needed to replace the rings when you have the
cylinders honed - sometimes they will not bed in properly otherwise". So I
pulled it apart again, put in new rings, properly gapped, etc, ran a hone
through again, and reassembled. Fired it up, and guess what? Same oil smoke.
Tried running it in for 20 minutes at varying rpms from 1500-2500, only got
worse as it got warmer. Great oil pressure, haven't changed the carbs.
What's wrong? Bad rings? Need to run in longer? On the last disassembly,
no sign of oil getting past the head gasket anywhere, all plugs equally
black, oil smoke coming out of valve cover vent . . .
