It' probably did a nice job of keeping the exhaust manifold clean-- 
amals are notorious gas leakers. The only place I have Amals is on my  
Vincent and my Goldstars, and that's just for period authenticity.  
Otherwise they'd join my lucas distributors in the catapult.
