You shouldn't do any of that. You probably have some bent parts that  
are causing the gap. Either the upright, or the arms are the most  
likely, but it could be anything. The parts should fit precisely and  
move freely.

If you stroke the suspension and the gap changes then you definitely  
have bent parts.
