I have the Southwick conversion on my TR3 with the stock-length axle  
tubes.  There plates were ground down a bit to fit over the flange.   
It gets thin in places.  Also, the guy who performed the conversion  
used U-bolts of different diameters so that the outer's are thinner to  
make a better fit over the flange.
