There are a few gentle turns and some elevation changes along the route=20
we picked out.=C2=A0 My friend Rich was the main man, I was his assistant.=
=C2=A0=20
We spent quite a few hours scouting the rural roads of Utah to find this=20
spot.=C2=A0 And doing a couple of test passes in a Utah Highway Patrol Crow=
n=20
Vic along the route seemed fine.=C2=A0 But we never went over 100 - 110 mph=
.

The morning of the event there were many drivers ready to give it a go.=C2=
=A0=20
About 5th out was this bright orange Camaro, heavily modified.=C2=A0 It=20
finished up at the end of the run clocked at 195 mph.=C2=A0 The event was a=
=20
fundraiser for the UHP, with the money going into the Fallen Heroes Fund=20
or whatever it was actually called, which provided financial assistance=20
to families of troopers who were killed in the line of duty. The kicker=20
on this event was that the drivers would pay a "fine" of $1 per mph=20
clocked at the finish.=C2=A0 After already shelling out something like 5=20
grand for the entry fee.

Anyway, a few cars after that Bitchin' Camaro the jeweler's son took off=20
in the Enzo.=C2=A0 We had spotters along the route at many of the mileposts=
,=20
and they would radio in a quick word when a car passed there station.=C2=A0=
 A=20
rough guess based on the time between spotters calling in the Ferrari's=20
position was that it was closing in on 200 mph.=C2=A0 The spotter who saw i=
t=20
at the end said it hit a small rise in the road, got airborne and when=20
the front wheels hit the ground they were pointed in a different=20
direction than the rest of the car.=C2=A0 So it went sideways and rolled 6 =
-=20
7 times.=C2=A0 At 200 mph.=C2=A0 The car disintegrated, leaving major chunk=
s=20
scattered along the side of the road for about a mile and a half.=C2=A0 Lef=
t=20
rear quarter over there, engine and gearbox there, and so on.=C2=A0 But as=
=20
you can see from the picture, the passenger compartment, the carbon=20
fiber roll cage, was intact and in one piece.=C2=A0 Some fine engineering.=
=C2=A0=20
Driver was banged up and bruised, but not as badly as one might expect=20
given the details of the mishap.

And over a period of the next few years a local shop pieced the car back=20
together, making some changes and the driver ended up setting a land=20
speed record in the car out at the Salt Flats.

And oddly enough, Rich and I were not contacted about assisting with the=20
event the following year.
