Hi Rick,
Bit of a long shot, but I would suggest that you check the wire that
runs from the terminal on the distributor to the points again. Id sounds
as though the fault is related to the distributor advance somehow.

I'm still having trouble getting my newly rebuilt BN2 to run smooth.

I've changed out the plugs and coil and gone through the distributor
several
times. We've even put the distributor on a machine to check out its
operation
and it worked fine. I installed new bumble bee wires.

The carbs have been rebuilt with new needles and jets and all the seals.
The
bowls have been adjusted. I tried Grosse jets and then reverted back to
the
standard needle type valves. The fuel pump is a new solid state SU.

The only thing that has made some improvement was when I tried the old
Delco
coil that came with the project. This coil is over thirty years old.
With this
old Delco coil the engine idles OK but runs rough at higher RPM. It can
even
backfire when opening the throttle quickly.

The two new standard type coils as well as one new Lucas Sport Coil
cause the
engine to run rough at both low idle rpms as well as during revving. If
I
observe the timing mark when flashing with the timing light. I can see
the
mark advance with higher RPMs but as it moves above approx. 15-20
degrees
advanced, it starts to jump around mostly with no advance but even going
to
the retard side.

Is there any kind of condition that would make the Delco coil run better
than
the new coils. I'm thinking that the Delco can't be better than newly
purchased coils and it must be masking some other problem.

Any ideas are welcome.
