Backfiring through the exhaust is caused by unburned fuel...the carbs
continue to deliver fuel after the throttle is "shut off". I'd check to see
if the mixture is way too rich (for what ever reason) and to see if the
timing was way too retarded ( causing very hot run condition, leading to
dieseling and ignition of the fuel source.)
