Scott,
'Fraid I can't be much help here ... I was working from memory and unfortunately
I don't recall that much detail. Just about every seal I've replaced, though,
needed
to be bedded completely in it's housing/recess. From what you described this
could
well be your problem.
The leak you describe is probably coming from the (lack of) seal. I can't
think of
anything--besides a serious crack somewhere--that causes this leak at this
location
besides the seal. If the O-ring and paper gasket on the outer surface didn't
seal well
you'll usually get a leak inside the brake drum.
