While the headlamps and side lamps are both controlled by the same switch
they are on separate circuits. It sounds like the contact within the switch
has  failed. You can check to see if there is any output on the red wires
exiting the switch when the switch is in the on position. There is a
quadruple connector where the front and rear side lamps are provided with
power from the switch. Look for a connector with four red wires. If the hot
wire is loose you won't have side lamps, but you should still have dash
lights since that circuit splits off at the switch.

Note that the tail lamp run is considered a hazard in these cars because if
there is a short in a lamp or the wire is damaged there is no fuse in the
line to protect the circuit. If this occurs it can let the smoke out of the
affected wire and damage the other wires in the harness. It's a good idea to
put an in-line fuse on the red wire for that reason.

If you are lucky you may just have a loose wire. If not the switch is not
too expensive.
