List,
The engine for my MkI BN7 now sits on the engine stand. While pondering the
work needed on it during the restoration of my car, it occurred to me that the
MkIII engines have something like 150 hp, while my MkI engine has ~ 128 hp.
Approx 17% difference. A quick search of the Clausager book shows some of the
chronological modifications to the engines. Near as I can tell, from the 1959
29D engine to the 1963 29K engine the major engine mod's which probably
increased hp were: cam shaft, valve springs, and of course the carbs (with
different intake manifolds no doubt). My car has HD6's while the 29K engine
has the bigger HD8's.
Also, I think the 29K has a crank damper, and a different distributor (why?).
Is this important to consider - for my purposes?
Did the exhaust manifold change? I might consider headers.
So, if I want to upgrade my engine to 150 hp or so, would these be the
standard (and reasonably affordable) changes? Anything else substantially
different between these engines - that I should know about? Should I stick
with the HD6's ? Don't say Weber's!
Any other mod's recommended?
I know I could go crazy and spend a ton of money at Dennis Welch, but I'm not
building a race car, nor do I have unlimited budget. Rather, I would like to
upgrade hp and stay within the envelop of drivability and durability of the
engine, so I use the 29K engine as a benchmark of sorts. As usual, thanks for
any input.
