I have "The Scientific Design of Exhaust and Intake Systems" 

There is no (explicit) reference of 4-2-1 headers (that I could find), but lots
on 3-1 (with the siamesed center port).

I'll look some more.  It's a 274-page book  ... on passing gas ;)
