The Triumph gear knob mounted O/D slide switch has the wires running down
inside the gear shift shaft which is hollow. This is the set-up on my Triumph
Dolomite Sprint based Lotus 7 replica. My BN2 gear shift shaft is solid as I
think the later A/H ones were as well.

  Carlos,
Perhaps the Volvo or Triumph plastic knob with the switch built in
would
  work.
If you wanted to loose the chrome stick look entirely, you could slip
some
black shrink sleeve over the wire and stick and then shrink it.
I always wondered about the heat of an aluminium knob. I guess you
might
  need to wear driving gloves.
