Gary,

I recently fixed the same clunk you describe--my front trunnion upper bushes
were completely gone--so the top of the spindle was held in place by a half
inch bolt through a 1" hole!

The secret is taking tension off the front suspension. Suggest you jack up
the front of the car by the lower A-arm, then remove the wheel; grasp the
brake disc/drum and shake the whole works in various directions--you'll see
where the problem is.

If worn, suggest you replace the bushings with the soft plastic bushings
available from various suppliers. They seem to give a better ride than the
stock rubber ones.
