Bill,
I have had some problems over the years with hard, to no starts only
when the BJ8 was hot.
Your problem, together with some other recent battery cable related
e-mails, prompted me to relate my recent, positive experience in this
area with our car.
I recently replaced the original battery cable with a heavy guage
welding cable, and have found this apparently to be my problem. The car
starts instantly, hot or cold, with no cranking necessary. Of course, I
also replaced the solenoid to starter cable, as well as the solenoid.
Had the starter checked (good), cleaned and tightened all connections
including ground.
Having solved this very same problem with our Alfa GTV (battery in
boot), I believe this is a very good solution to the commonly
experienced, excessive voltage drop with cars having boot located
batteries.
The welding cable was very inexpensive (<$20), and included all the
appropriate connectors on the ends. I just took the old cable to a
welding supply store here in Phoenix, and they reproduced it with
welding cable. Was no biggie to take out the old or put in the new,
particularly with a lift.
