Gentlemen and -women, start your engines at Cloud croft's 'Run to the Aspens'

CLOUDCROFT Rusty Russell bought his first Austin-Healey, circa 1950s
model, for college transportation. At the time it was only four years
old.
When he was graduated he sold the car and bought a brand-spankin' new
Dodge Dart convertible.
"I regretted it the next day," Russell said.
So strongly had he fallen in love with the Austin, eventually he'd buy
another, a 1961 Austin-Healey. Now he owns two, one a Jensen-Healey,
as part of his four-car classic car collection. The other two are a
1953 Willys station wagon, and a 1974 Cadillac Coupe de Ville.
Russell will drive one of his steel-and-chrome babies to Zenith Park
on Saturday as part of the third-annual "Run to the Aspens" car show.
Sixty drivers have registered their vehicles.
"More'll show up," Russell said.
Russell, one of the event's three co-creators, expects a hundred.
That's how many stood gleaming in the Sacramento Mountains sun in
2004. What admirers may not have realized last year was more than $1
million worth of cars in all colors and styles, from over
three-quarters of a century of automaking starting in the 1920s, were
parked in the park.
The show runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and features
antiques, classics, customs, hot rods, trucks and motorcycles. There's
no entry fee. Russell encourages drivers to just pull into the show
arena. To register a vehicle beforehand call Russell at 682-5032.
Trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m. The Cloudcroft Lion's Club will
sell soft drinks.
Traveling back in time this weekend will be enhanced with 1950s/60s
rock 'n' roll music from Alamogordo radio broadcaster Bob Flotte.
Don't be surprised to find him spinning tunes from A-Z: the Avalons to
the Beach Boys and Beatles, all the way to the Zombies. He'll also
broadcast live reports on KUPR 91.7 FM.
"Run to the Aspens" coincides with the 12th annual Gov. Gary Johnson
10K Run/Walk on Sunday, and Logging Day on Saturday. For the run,
former Gov. Johnson, a world-class athlete, is expected to
participate. Saturday's lumber competition features such goodnatured
local logging foes as Andy Olsen and Joel Dees revving their chainsaws
and slicing into fresh pine at the other end of Zenith Park. Last year
the throaty rumble of American V-8s under highly-waxed steel
harmonized with the higher-pitched motors of finely-tuned chainsaws.
