I would second (or third) Steve's recommendation. I used a 12 point
Harbor Freight 3/4" drive socket and wrapped the nut with a strip of
copper shim material (beer can aluminum would work, too). I just
ground off the bellmouth area so that the maximum surface of the four
engaged points would make contact. I had to tap the socket over the
nut to seat it with the shim material. No problem removing or
reinstalling the nuts with that jury rig. The nuts showed no damage
from the process.
Just a side note for the record. The early BN1 (4-lug) axles used a
smaller octagon nut, same size as MGs. I R&Red a 5-lug axle.
