You can actually do a surprisingly good job of detailing the engine
compartment without pulling the engine, just by preparing to pull the engine.
Which is
to say: remove the carburetors and carb manifold, remove the generator, remove
the distributor, drain the oil and remove the oil filter. With all that
removed, you'll be surprised at how much space you have to clean the block and
engine compartment. You can even unfasten the wiring harness, then by moving
stuff
around and masking the area not to be painted you can paint a lot of the body
stuff if you want, and/or just clean and hand-paint the engine block, spray
paint the generator and oil filter (or replace the canister oil filter with a
spin-on adaptor and spray your replacement oil filter to match). Hirsch in NJ
makes a good brush-on engine paint, and Moss supplies a matching rattle-can
engine paint -- specify Healey engine green, the light-green metallic.
Will be a good set of winter projects, and help you get to know your Healey
up-close-and-personal.
Have fun and be sure that the list is here for you whenever you need specific
advice. Buying parts? Healey Surgeons, and British Car Specialists are good
sources that will give you advice along with the parts, and Moss is always
there on a Saturday if you're sure you know what you want and need it by
Monday.
-- but as much as possible give your monetary business to the source that
provides you the advice.
Cheers
Gary Anderson
