If you don't mind the noise in first gear and the car does not jump out of
first, you can probably get by with just replacing your synchro rings and
having your selector forks rebuilt. You should also replace the third
motion shaft bearing since you have to remove it to replace the second gear
synchro ring.

Subject: BJ7 gearbox woes

After 16 years, five homes, one wife and two kids my BJ7 is finally finished
and on the road. Now come the "sorting out" of all the little problems. So I
am after some gearbox advice. The shift between reverse/ first/ second is
vague to say the least and down changes from 3rd to 2nd impossible despite
double clutching and even up changes 1st to 2nd must be taken slowly. First
gear is very noisey but the rest of the gears operate fine. Obviously I am
up for a gearbox rebuild but would like your ideas on the potential
problems. Could it just be mostly the selector wear or do you think I have
layshaft problems?

Cheers

Pieter
