I bought a straight 6-cyl tank on eBay and here are the dipstick
measurements observed by adding water to the tank in 2-gallon increments
from empty:

2 gal - 15/16"
4 gal - 1-7/8"
6 gal - 2-9/16"
8 gal - 3-5/16"
10 gal - 4"
12 gal - 5-1/8"
13.75 gal - 6-3/4"--approximately 1" up in the filler stub.

The tank was carefully leveled on sawhorses and the water carefully
measured.

A stick of 1/4" x 1/8" hardwood was used as a dipstick and the edge adjacent
to the filler neck, the underside of the stick, going down to the contact
point on the floor of the tank, was read. In each reading, the stick was
carefully placed in the same spot at the low point of the filler neck stub.
A rubber filler hose was not attached to the tank.
