factory applied seam sealer

I don't ever recall any discussion of this topic, although I may have  
just missed it. I am only a few weeks from painting and I got to  
wondering about where the factory-applied seam sealer was used on our  
cars originally. I will probably seal every possible seam, but does  
anyone have of any knowledge of this topic?
