I was once told by a very successful professional race engine builder 
that you had to be careful lightening flywheels as the mass was 
calculated to direct harmonic vibration at a point in the crankshaft 
where it was supported by a main bearing, and that if you lightened the 
flywheel the weight should be reduced to half the original weight which 
would then still direct the vibration to the bearing point. Anyone ever 
heard of this?
