All I do Mike is put the square shaft on a vice and use a cold chisel to cut
a small gouge on opposite sides of the shaft up near the cup washer.

Michael,
     O.K., so after the parts are re-chromed and the barrel is replaced
how do you get it all to hold back together again.  Not sure how to
re-crimp the square shaft.
