Peter,
I was there and wondered why people were bidding so high on them. They
were described as barn find condition, but all but perhaps one were in
junkyard condition. Total rust buckets. Most of the other cars were in
similar condition, except for the Mini Moke (almost running cond.), MG
TD (barn find cond.) and perhaps a couple of others. A friend of mine
who restores British cars saw the MGB after the fact when it was
elevated on a rollback and described it as the rustiest MGB he's ever
seen. One of the Minis appeared to be broken in half. The star of the
auction was the '39 Ford woody wagon which could probably be called barn
find cond., though a bunch of termites lived in the barn. The wood
would need to be totally replaced. The bidding for that car was between
two phone bidders who maybe had never seen the car (that or they were
nuts). I suspect when phone or internet bidders arrived to pick up
their prizes, they were a bit peeved.
Nevertheless, it was an interesting auction to attend and there were
hundreds of lots of parts. Unfortunately the parts were all mixed up.
If you bought a one of the lots you usually got British, European, and
American stuff with it.
Charlie
