You might try putting a little air pressure in the gas tank with an air hose
and rag to try and prime the pump.  That worked for me with an original gas
pump.

Replace the pump inlet pipe with a rubber hose. Put the end of the hose 
in a pint of gas, turn on the pump & see what happens. The result will 
lead you to the next check.
