Good question!  I'd be interested to know as well. 

Can offer that the insides appeared to have been painted white, in order 
to reflect the back (6-cyl) or perimeter (4-cyl?) gauge lighting.  The 
outer case appears to be painted--it's a bit dark for Zn plating--but 
that's just a guess.
