Check the accuracy of the gauge first, then check the opening 
temperature of the thermostat in a pan of water with a good laboratory 
thermometer and low heat to let the temperature of the water rise slowly.
The max. coolant temperature in the top of the radiator or cylinder head 
should be about 10:C over the opening  temperature of the thermostat.
