It probably reduced the amount of brass by a few grams, saving a few pence, and 
making an Austin bean-counter a hero.

Our '56 BN2 has the hex bolt type, my '67 BJ8--built in late '66--has the 
slotted monstrosity. That should narrow it down a bit.
