For those of you how have been waiting to hear more about this long running
(:D) saga. here is an update.
I should have gone with my gut on this one...
Despite the fact that the "original" Lucas 45012E coil would produce a
solid spark every time I tested it I decided to substitute a Sport Coil
that I had just to be sure that that was not the problem!!!
The result was an immediate transformation in the way the engine starts and
runs. Fires up at the first push of the "S" button and idles smoothly at
600 RPM.
In addition the "run on" problem seems to have mysteriously vanished..
I'm working on acquiring a replacement 45012 coil.
BTW the one that was on the car was, it turns out, a reproduction which was
fairly well done but upon close examination was quite clearly not an
"original".
Many thanks to everyone for their helpful recommendations...now for that
long awaited 100 mile test drive.
