I have a feeling that my PBR booster, which I installed a number of years a=
go, was not the same ratio as my old Girling.The Girling had given up, and =
had multiple problems, but I clearly remember that back when it was working=
it had a much more satisfying "bite"- less effort than the PBR.
After reading your post, I will be looking to see if I have the little rubb=
er elbow hose!

A few years ago, several Healey owners here installed PBR VH40 boosters in =
our BJ8=E2=80=99s.=C2=A0 We sourced them at:=C2=A0http://www.hydroboost.com=

n the process =E2=80=93 the important one is that the VH40 booster is made =
in several different versions with different boost ratios.=C2=A0 It means t=
hat you have to be sure that the one you buy has a matching boost ratio as =
the original Girling for it to work properly in your BJ8.=C2=A0 (the earlie=
r Healeys that had optional boosters installed would use a VH44 that would =
match the earlier smaller Girling).=C2=A0These boosters are diaphragm units=
, which means that a vacuum loss will lock the brakes on =E2=80=93 sometime=
s not the best scenario! =E2=80=93 ask me how I know about this.=C2=A0 Turn=
s out that there were some defective small rubber elbow hoses =E2=80=93 the=
one that connects the two sections of the unit.=C2=A0 They were split on i=
nstallation at the factory.=C2=A0 The fix was easy =E2=80=93 shorten the st=
eel pipe leading up to the valve body and use a length of quality vacuum ho=
se and a couple of hose clamps.=C2=A0We have found the PBR VH40 to be an ex=
cellent replacement for the original Girling =E2=80=93 I=E2=80=99m told tha=
t it=E2=80=99s getting increasingly difficult to find quality rebuild kits =
for the Girling.=C2=A0 So in the interests of safety, a replacement booster=
is preferable in most respects.=C2=A0The above web-site will answer quite =
a few questions for you.=C2=A0 We had mounting bracket kits and pre-bent br=
ake pipes sent with the boosters =E2=80=93 the brackets were Kilmartin piec=
es at the time.=C2=A0 So basically the whole thing was a bolt in propositio=
n.=C2=A0 A slightly longer (about 4 inches) vacuum hose is required to conn=
ect the booster to the manifold.=C2=A0Incidentally, the PBR booster has a b=
leed screw right on it, which makes things a bit easier when bleeding the s=
ystem.=C2=A0I am happy with the braking feel of my BJ8 with the PBR booster=
installed.=C2=A0 I=E2=80=99m pretty sure that they can be sourced in North=
