One area of dispute in our local club is how to set the Max advance at 3000=
RPM.=C2=A0
Some say the vac advance tube must be disconnected from the distributor whe=
n setting max advance, some say it does not. Still others said it would not=
 make any difference. This was proved to be false after checking the advanc=
e reading with the vac tube connected and disconnected. It did make a big d=
ifference. But the basic question remains should it be set with the vac adv=

 My friend Bob and I have his rebuilt engine back in=20
and running after its crankshaft failure. It is currently 89MM bore with=20
a DWR1 camshaft similar to the 100M Cam specs. The head is a previously=20
installed Denis Welch aluminum head that we has to mill slightly because=20
the crank failure allowed the #4 piston to hit the head. The valves were=20
ok.=C2=A0 During the break in period we have the timing set to 8 degrees=20
advance at idle.=C2=A0 Bad me I don't know what the advance is at 3000 rpm=
=20
with the Mallory distributor. We plan to check it this week and keep the=20
advance to around 35 degrees total advance. The engine is running great=20
with 8 degrees advance at idle, backing it off to 6 degrees the engine=20
was not as happy. Using 93 octane gas with 10% alcohol.=C2=A0 Ethanol free=
=20
gas is available near our house in Maryland but not here in CT.
