I have a 1.28 overdrive with a set of Mike Lempert=92s 3.54:1 final drive g=
ears in my 100 and I am very happy with the setup.

It is very tractable around town and relaxed cruising on the highway.

I respectfully disagree. First is so low in a Healey I often started in se=
cond before I put a 3.54 diff in my BJ8. I still start in second if I'm ro=
lling at all, facing downhill or it just won't go into first (plenty of low=
-end torque in the old lump). Second is more usable as well (first and sec=
ond are too close together IMO; I barely get into second before it's time t=
o upshift). I wouldn't mind a .28 OD ratio with a 3.54 diff either.
