The original pumps had a capacitor over the points which made them dual
polarity. At a later stage SU changed the capacitor for a diode which
made the pump polarity sensitive. If you remove the diode and fit a
transil over the points the pump becomes dual polarity.

The very early pumps with the single points may not have had any
capacitor or diode fitted, which would lead to spark erosion of the
points. These were also dual polarity.

The later electronic/solid state versions are all polarity sensitive.
